Rimworld Hydroponics 101 Guide: Setup & Working

Are you curious about how Rimworld’s hydroponics works? You can find all the information you need about hydroponics on this page.

Newcomers and veterans alike will find it helpful. In addition, it also contains basic hydroponics statistics.

Let’s begin.

What is Hydroponics in Rimworld?

what is hydroponics in rimworld

Rimworld’s colony’s main goal is to survive. And maintaining a good mood and keeping your colonists warm and safe will help you achieve this.

So, it’s extremely important to ensure your colony has a reliable source of food in Rimworld to succeed. However, finding and storing food is one of the most challenging aspects of Rimworld.

It is also one of the places where many beginners get lost and end their journey too quickly. But don’t worry. You can get food in Rimworld in several different ways.

Here are some options:

This guide will completely focus on farming as it is the last way to obtain food. In Rimworld, your colonists will already be familiar with planting and growing food outdoors in tillable soil.

And through research, they will eventually be able to utilize a more advanced form of farming. This will allow food to be grown faster and more efficiently, for a cost. It is called hydroponics.

A Hydroponics Basin will be able to be built by your colonists once they have researched it. Compared to planting plants outside on grass, this will allow them to grow much quicker.

And the ability to grow plants indoors in a hydroponic basin is the main advantage of having one.

Unlocking the Hydroponics Basin

The player must research the required item to unlock the hydroponics basin and grow plants inside Rimworld. In hydroponics, you can build a hydroponics basin using scientific research.

But, before you can start researching hydroponics, you must first research Electricity and all the prerequisites. And, by completing this research, you will only unlock the Hydroponics basin itself, as you can see in the image.

In the game, the Hydroponics basin is described as “An artificial nutrient bath for growing plants.”. Also, a continuous supply of nutrients must be maintained. If the power goes out, plants will die.

Once you have completed the Hydroponics piece, you can now construct your first hydroponics basin. But, even though you can build this outside, it is best to do so indoors.

The elements affect plants even when they are grown in hydroponics basin. So, if you want the plant of your choice to grow, you will still have to keep it at the right temperature.

How to Build and Use the Hydroponics Basin in Rimworld

Your first hydroponics basin can now be constructed once you have researched the Hydroponics piece. It’s best to keep these indoors, even if you can build them outside. The elements affect even hydroponic plants. For your plant to grow, you’ll need to keep it at the right temperature.

Building A Hydroponics Basin

The first step in building the basin is to select the Architect tab at the bottom. The Architect tab is where all of your creations are created in Rimworld.

If you have accessed the Architect section, you will find the Hydroponics basin under the Production tab. To access the basin, select it from the drop-down menu.

Now, select the area in your colony where you would like to build the basin, and then left-click it.

You will need the following resources to build the hydroponics basin:

You will eventually be able to create the hydroponics basin after you have placed the blueprints somewhere. You can choose the colonist if you want the basin built faster.

You can then select Prioritize by right-clicking on the hydroponics basin blueprint. The colonists will stop doing whatever they are doing and create the basin.

Hydroponics and Power

You’ll also need a constant supply of power for the hydroponics basin. The plants will eventually die if the power is cut to the basin. If you’re having a lot of basins in your colony, you’ll need a power station that can handle 70W each. Plants also need the right temperature. Sun Lamps are great for doing this indoors.

The sun lamp creates a growing room indoors

Sun Lamps grow brightly enough to make crops believe they are in direct sunlight, as you can see from the description above. Another thing When the sun lamp is running, it consumes a large amount of power. You might want to wait with the hydroponics setup for now if you don’t have a good power setup in your colony. You can also start with just one or two basins.

Hydroponics setups benefit from direct access to charged batteries, so give the line a charge. Create a room with batteries already in it to make a spare battery area. Put a circuit on the batteries and connect them to a power source. The batteries will stay charged after you turn the circuit off once they’re fully charged. In the case of an outage or broken cable, you’ll have a backup power supply so your plants won’t die immediately if you use spare batteries.

Using the Hydroponics Basin

Various settings and ways are available to interact with your colony’s hydroponics basin. You can select the basin by left-clicking on it if you want to make any changes to it.

At the bottom of the screen, you will see a list of options. Here are all the options you have.

Deconstruct: This one simply disassembles the Hydroponics basin so that the resources used to build it can be reclaimed. It’s a good option if you have enough food and are low on steel.

Allow: For whatever reason, you can allow or disallow colonists from using the Hydroponics basin. However, don’t forget that even forbidden basins require power.

Reconnect: If you click this option, you can connect the hydroponics basin to the nearest power source.

And, it is possible to reconnect the power using this method if your power conduits have been broken down and moved and the basin still displays no power.

Designate toggle power: It is possible to turn the hydroponics basin on or off using this toggle.

You will have to manually send a colonist to the basin if you toggle the power on or off. You will then have to flick a switch to experience the effects.

Plant: This hydroponics basin allows you to select the type of plant you want to grow. You can choose what plants you wish to grow based on what you have already researched.

But, before some plants can be planted and maintained, your colonists will need to be at a certain growth level.

Build Copy: Using this feature, you can quickly build another Hydroponics basin without navigating the appropriate menus. This is a huge time-saver.

There is also a hotkey associated with each function of the hydroponics basin. You can see in the image above that each icon corresponds to a letter.

By pressing the O’ key, you can immediately set up another hydroponics bench. Place it anywhere you want.

You can select the plant to be grown once you select the Plant menu. However, be careful not to damage existing plants.

The colonists will be taken out if you choose a plant that is different from the existing one. You will lose all progress for that plant as it grows in the Hydroponics basin.

You can harvest whatever resources from a plant that has already reached the point where it can be harvested.

There are strengths and weaknesses in every plant. Some plants produce materials rather than food. One example is the cotton plant, which grows and yields cloth. It can be used to make clothing and furniture.

On the other hand, growing rice plants will produce a source of rice after they are finished and harvested. So, find out which plants are best for your environment by clicking the small information icon on each one.

Upon selecting a plant, once it has grown, you will be able to see its growth progress and its health. Farmers will automatically plant in the hydroponics basin.

And when the plant reaches 100% growth, the plant will be harvested automatically.
