Project Zomboid emphasizes the importance of foraging as a survival skill. Players are able to find a variety of items in the forest and wilderness. And, foraging has been substantially overhauled in the newest Update 41.
Besides searching for food, foraging also involves searching for crafting materials, medicinal plants, dead animals, etc.
So, in our guide, we’ll tell you how to forage in Project Zomboid.
How to Forage in Project Zomboid
Foraging will begin once you select “Investigate Area”. Click the spyglass icon to do so.
Activating this button displays an overlay with the terrain type, the position of the sun in the sky, and a button to activate the search mode.
While Search Mode is active, the screen will become blurry except for an area around you called the “Target Radius”. This area grows as your foraging skills increase.
You should see items spawn all around you as you walk in this mode. An eyeball icon will appear over your character when you are approaching the target radius of an item that you have the skill level to locate.
You’ll see the item’s icon after remaining near it for a short while. A small amount of XP should be awarded at this point.
Doubling-clicking the icon will add the item to your inventory. By right-clicking, you can gather or discard the item. And, no matter which option you choose, you will earn an extra XP.
You can find more items based on your foraging level. And, foraging items are not always natural items. There are some other useful things that you can find while foraging.
Where can you Forage in Project Zomboid?
You can forage almost anywhere on the map that has grass. Obviously, you can’t forage on roads or inside buildings. Even some grassy areas in cities are not suitable for foraging.
If you are going to forage in the woods, you should go out and do so. In the forest, there are clearly more items to forage. There are also fewer zombies to worry about.
How to Get Better at Foraging
A profession that gives a boost to the foraging skill can be selected at the start of the game if you want to get a head start on foraging.
Foraging skills are enhanced by two different professions. Park rangers and Fishermen both enhance foraging skills.
The foraging category can also be boosted with traits. Foraging is a skill that can be improved by the traits Former Scout and Hiker. Additionally, you can craft medicinal items by foraging through the Herbalist trait.
Find multiplier skill books to quickly improve your foraging skill as a third option. You can find nearly all of these books for Project Zomboid.
A skill you choose will receive a temporary XP multiplier boost after you read these books. After you finish reading the book, go foraging and watch how quickly your skills grow.
Depending on your level of skill, you might need to read different books. The beginner ‘How to forage’ book, for example, will only give you multipliers for the first two skill levels of foraging.
You will need to read the corresponding book if you want to keep getting multipliers beyond these levels.
This is all about how to forage in Project Zomboid. In the early stages of Project Zomboid, foraging is useful. However, it isn’t a necessity for survival.
